Selecting Peonies By Height
Peonies vary in their dimensions such as height, size and width/diameter depending on where they are grown. The actual height observed at any given geographical location is subject to their prevailing climatic conditions such as precipitation, intensity of the sun, wind and temperature. At Hollingsworth Peonies, we prefer using the “relative scale,” using a more general but appropriate representation of height. Below, you will find definition and scale, including a numerical range for our peonies, based on our observations and measurements taken here in NW Missouri.
Peony Height Scale
| Dwarf | < 16” |
| Semi-dwarf | 16” – 25” |
| Medium | 26” – 35” |
| Tall | 36” – 45” |
| Very Tall | > 45” |
These numerical values above will not hold true for peonies grown in greenhouses, coastal growing environments such as Oregon, Washington or parts of New England, which likely will exceed the numerical scale listed. Conversely, peonies grown in the mountainous, arid locations of Utah, Idaho, and the Dakotas probably under perform in these values.
