Description

Japanese form, medium size flower opens in deep chocolate-red shades. Two layers of broad petals surround a center cluster of petalodes, each segment delicately edged by a touch of gold. The tightly clustered petalodes obscure a set of diminutive, pale-yellow carpels with dark red stigmas. A pleasing, well-tailored flower, that is of good substance, slightly fragrant and surprisingly long lasting. The plant habit is well above average, a reliable and productive bloomer. The plant is vigorous and of good increase, growing a medium height bush within a few years of planting. One main flower and an occasional side bud are born on long stems well above the foliage. The arching but stiff stems make a self-supporting, broad silhouette bush. Staking is not needed if grown under normal conditions. The stems show a bronze-red cast which is more pronounced in a cool spring climate. This color is nicely contrasted by the semi-glossy, medium green foliage. This peony furnishes fine stems for the vase and bestows elegance and beauty to both the cut flower garden and flower border.
